In August, 2017 Canyon Country Discovery Center lead an overnight backpacking trip for a group of students from the Girls on the Run. This international non-profit is dedicated towards encouraging girls to understand both themselves and the world around them, as well as build confidence, leadership skills, and create life-long fitness and healthy habits. Their trip explored the Abajo Mountains and Bears Ears National Monument, including hiking, camping, plant identification, archeology, and various problem solving activities.

The challenges of backcountry for this group of young women seemed to be part of trying something new. They learned about water purification, discovered one-thousand-year-old ruins, and met every challenge with a smile.

Backpacking provides a unique environment fostering independence and important outdoor skills. Their curiosity and boldness warms our hearts knowing a new generation of strong, adventurous girls are on the run!
